Overview

Education and Public Awareness

NEPTUNE offers rich educational opportunities for learners of all ages. Internet connections will provide real-time data and images from very dynamic earth-ocean systems. NEPTUNE products will be useful and accessible to classrooms, laboratories, and even homes. Programs will include K-12 curricula and activities, exhibits for science museums and aquaria, undergraduate and graduate research, and a real-time web interface for all users.

Education and public awareness programs for ocean observatories are being developed through national-level workshops sponsored by NSF, EARTH workshops at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), and NEPTUNE-sponsored workshops. The participants are educators, scientists, technologists, and skilled innovators in science content presentation.

Two NSF reports feature chapters on education and public awareness: The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Science Plan and the ORION Workshop Report.
